Description

In October 2020, Alberta and Canada signed the Agreement for the Conservation and Recovery of the Woodland Caribou in Alberta to facilitate woodland caribou recovery in Alberta. Alberta is committed to the implementation of this Agreement which supports provincial caribou recovery efforts including landscape-level planning, habitat conservation, management and recovery planning, caribou mortality and population management and caribou population and habitat monitoring. Alberta and Canada agreed to regularly report on the progress towards the commitments in this Agreement. These reports provide summaries of progress made and actions undertaken.

The details of where, when and how trees on Crown land in Alberta are harvested and managed for sustainability are contained in forest management plans approved by the Government of Alberta, with input from the public and other stakeholders. Forest management plans prepared by industry are a requirement of Forest Management Agreements (FMA) negotiated between the Government of Alberta and forest companies. Forest management plans provide direction for sustainable management of forest resources. The forest management planning area under consideration is FMA 0200040, allocated to Tolko Industries Ltd., Norbord Inc., and La Crete Sawmills Ltd. The FMA area is located in northwestern Alberta; it falls predominately within Central Mixedwood, Lower Boreal Highlands, and Northern Mixedwood natural sub-regions. The FMA area is located within the Lower Peace Land-use Framework planning region.

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Canadian Natural Resources Limited (Canadian Natural) Pike 2 project (formerly Devon Canada Corporation). Canadian Natural is proposing a new in situ oil sands project in the Southern Athabasca Oil Sands region. To recover bitumen resources from the McMurray formation, steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology and diluent co-injection and cogeneration would be employed. The Project would include a central processing facility (CPF), well pads, source water and disposal well sites, pipelines, roads and power lines. Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Pembina Gas Services Ltd. Two Lakes Sour Gas Processing Facility. The project is a sour gas processing facility capable of processing up to 200 million cubic feet per day of raw sour inlet gas containing up to 8% H2S. The proposal is to take in sour gas from the surrounding area and produce sales gas (methane), natural gas liquids (NGLs – used to make ethane, propane and butane), and condensate. The Project includes a raw gas, hydrocarbon liquids inlet; produced water separation and handling processing unit; an amine sweetening unit; a gas processing and NGL recovery unit; a sulphur recovery unit to create liquid sulphur from recovered H2S; a condensate stabilization processing unit; and natural gas compression for sweet sales gas. The Alberta Traffic Safety Plan includes a goal to reduce fatal and serious injury collisions in the province. In support of reaching this goal, Alberta Transportation commissioned Opus International Consultants (Canada) Limited to develop engineering strategies to address collision patterns on all Alberta highways and streets. This report provides a summary of the methodology and findings of Phase 1 of the resulting project. The report identifies the key collision trends in Alberta and describes a review of current practices in Alberta and research of the recent literature on the topic. It then presents a comprehensive list of possible measures and a systematic criteria for the selection of the more favourable ones, applies these criteria to over 90 measures, and culminates with the selection of 33 highly effective measures anticipated to be the most effective and the 12 "Priority 1" measures for further development and implementation.

The project is designed to sustain bitumen production levels at the Mildred Lake facility after depletion of the current approved mining areas, which is expected in 2024.
