Description

Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed Syncrude Canada Ltd. Mildred Lake Mine Extension (MLX). Proposal consists of two additional mining areas and affiliated perimeter features within and adjacent to the current operating and approved mining areas. The project is designed to sustain bitumen production levels at the Mildred Lake facility after depletion of the current approved mining areas, which is expected in 2024. The estimated mineable resource in the project area is 117 million m3 (738 million barrels) of recoverable bitumen. For more information on the environmental assessment process visit ea.alberta.ca.

Responsible Director: Alberta Energy Regulator; Project Stage: The EIA and applications were submitted December 2014. Requests for supplemental information were sent to the company on October 9 and December 9, 2015, June 3 and July 22, 2016, and March 27, 2017. On February 16 and November 25, 2016, April 12 and May 15, 2017, the company submitted supplemental information. On September 14, 2017, the designated Director of Environmental Assessment notified the Alberta Energy Regulator that the EIA report is complete pursuant to section 53 of EPEA. The review took 128 weeks.
