Description

In January 2007, the Aboriginal Consultation Interdepartmental Committee was formed to gather feedback from First Nations and Métis on the potential impacts that Alberta’s oil sands development may have on Aboriginal rights and traditional uses. This process ran parallel with a larger public consultation process with stakeholders in Alberta. The following report describes the background of Alberta’s Oil Sands Consultations initiative, how consultation was undertaken with each group, feedback received during the consultation process, the full versions of recommendations that First Nations and Métis would like to put forward to the Ministers for consideration, and Alberta's next steps for further consultations with First Nations and Métis.

The report, Promising Practices in First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education is part of the ongoing work of Alberta Education's, First Nations, Metis and Inuit Services Branch to identify school based practices that support positive outcomes for First Nations Metis and Inuit (FNMI) students. The in-depth, case studies of two Alberta schools is in direct response Alberta's Commission on Learning (2003) Recommendation #40 supporting an education system that encourages diversity of programming for FNMI students and learns from innovative programs. The two schools highlighted in this report were selected from a total of sixteen pilot schools in the recently completed First Nations Metis and Inuit (FMNI) School-Community Learning Environment Project. The report provides a literature review of current research in Aboriginal Education followed by a background section providing an overview of the project. In March 2003, Alberta Education began preparatory work for the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) School-Community Learning Environment Project to address a recognized achievement gap between FNMI and non FNMI learners. Implementation of the project occurred during the 2004-05 school year with the objective of addressing the needs of FNMI learners in sixteen pilot schools across Alberta. A collaborative approach among school staffs, Aboriginal parents, Elders, jurisdiction leaders, Alberta Education, and Aboriginal communities resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of innovative practices designed to improve FNMI student outcomes at individual pilot schools. The FNMI School-Community Learning Environment Project - Promising Practices Report (2007) highlights these promising practices in light of current research. The toxicity of arsenic is a subject of considerable research, as well as some controversy, particularly in relation to its potential to cause cancer. In order to better understand and assess the significance of the elevated cancer risk from arsenic exposure, Alberta Health and Wellness retained Cantox Environmental Inc. (CEI) to review previous research and assess the potential cancer risk using refined methodology consistent with that typically used by CEI. The work was meant to serve as a “second opinion” of the lifetime cancer risk that could be presented to people living in the Wood-Buffalo region from arsenic exposure.

This report describes the activities carried out during a project entitled Voice of Alberta Native Women's Foster care project. The project was funded through a grant received from Alberta Social Services and Community health to assist the Voice of Alberta Native Women's Society in employing native women on apart-time basis to promote foster care and recruit foster homes for the department. the project also allowed for the native women to identify and encourage community programs for native families, particularly in the more isolated areas, also to do a survey on the number of native families providing care to children who are not their own, and do not receive any financial assistance.
