Statistics on land use class are provided for Alberta as a whole and for each of the Land Use Framework regions. These reports are used when assessing future needs for policies to preserve and protect agricultural land in Alberta.

Description

In 2011, the Environmental Law Centre and the Miistakis Institute, at the request of the Government of Alberta's Land Use Secretariat, undertook an applied research project seeking to better understand the limitations of the current policy on conservation easements in order to inform a more robust policy. Conservation easements are legal contracts between a qualified private land conservation organization (or government agency) and a private landowner, whereby certain rights or opportunities are granted away by the landowner in order to protect the identified conservation values. The resulting land use restrictions are registered on title and run with the land regardless of the owner.
