Description

An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) allowance has been issued that recognizes out of province first aid certificates for workplace first aid training courses recognized by another Canadian province or territory, which comply with CSA Standard Z1210-17, First aid training for the workplace - Curriculum and quality management for training agencies. Out of province first aid certificates covered by the allowance will be considered as demonstrating proof of approved first aid training until the certificate expiry date. Work site parties have the flexibility to follow the original first aid course requirements in the OHS Code or to follow the allowance.

Description

Inter-jurisdictional Recognitions (IJRs) provide flexibility by recognizing standards adopted in different Canadian jurisdictions. These may be issued where there is an agreement between different jurisdictions, where recognizing another jurisdiction’s standard appropriately protects the health and safety of workers in Alberta while also supporting inter-provincial trade and labor mobility. Section 246 of the OHS Code outlines which respiratory protective equipment is allowed to be used at work sites in Alberta. An IJR has been issued that expands what is allowed to be used, which recognizes respiratory protective equipment approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Description

An occupational health and safety (OHS) allowance allows a work site party to vary from specific provisions of the OHS Code. A work site will have the flexibility to either follow the original rule in the OHS Code or follow the allowance. An allowance has been issued to allow demolition of a building without first removing materials with the potential to release asbestos fibres so long as the set of terms and conditions in the allowance is followed. The allowance applies in situations where a professional engineer has certified that the structural integrity of a building is or may become compromised due to abatement activities such that it would create a hazard to workers.

Description

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code places an obligation on employers to have a tending worker physically located outside a confined space, at or near the entrance, who is not to leave the area until all workers have left the confined space or another tending worker is in place. Confined Space Remote Monitoring System (CSRMS) technology is an engineered system that allows workers inside a confined space to be monitored remotely; meaning a tending worker does not have to be physically located at or near the entrance to a confined space. This allowance is issued for subsections 56(3) and 56(5) of the OHS Code, permitting work sites to use CSRMS technology. A work site will have the flexibility to either follow the original rule in the OHS Code or follow this allowance.
