Description

Under an extended producer responsibility system, producers take responsibility at end-of-life for the products and packaging they put on the market, such as single-use products, packaging and paper products and hazardous and special products. This information sheet contains information on registration as it relates to Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, which came into force on November 30, 2022. Obligated producers are required to register with the Alberta Recycling Management Authority in accordance with the EPR Regulation.

Under an extended producer responsibility system, producers take responsibility at end-of-life for the products and packaging they put on the market, such as single-use products, packaging and paper products and hazardous and special products. This information sheet serves as a reference guide for producers (including brand owners, importers and retailers) to Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, which came into force on November 30, 2022. EPR shifts the physical and financial burden of collecting, sorting, processing and recycling waste to producers who put materials into the market and away from local governments and taxpayers.
