Reports the findings of a study commissioned to investigate the challenges and opportunities facing rural schools and the impacts of these schools in their communities. The study investigated factors related to the success or failure of individual small rural schools as well as forms of cooperation, association or partnership that can support the viability of rural schools. The role of rural schools in community revitalization, and emerging models that address long-term viability of rural schools, were also investigated. While consistent with other published studies from the past 15 years, the findings of this study provide new information on the rural dynamics and processes related to the sustainability of schools in rural communities.
