The ministry coordinates an online survey of Albertans on topics related to the work of the ministry. Sport and recreation topics covered in the survey include: participation in organized sport, participation in active recreation, volunteering for sport and recreation organizations, bullying and harassment resource awareness, and concussion resource access.

The Alberta Recreation Survey is a series of surveys that have been conducted approximately every four years since 1981. The survey collects information related to participation patterns of Albertans and the factors which influence their recreation activity choices. The following questions have consistently been included in each survey: participation by household members and respondents in an extensive array of social, creative, cultural, recreation, outdoor and sport activities; respondents' three favourite activities and reasons for participation in their first favourite activity; an activity respondents would like to start and the reasons for not starting the activity, involvement as a volunteer; opinions on recreation and parks activities and services and demographic information about the respondents and their households. The purpose of the Building on the Basics resource guide is to support the planning of recreation services for those impacted by natural disasters and other emergency situations. While the role of the recreation sector in emergencies is often focused primarily on providing a staging area for first responders or shelter to people who have been displaced, there is also strong evidence that providing recreation services to those impacted by the emergency has significant benefits. The information, tools, and resources in this guide can be tailored to suit the local context and customized to fit with organizational needs and capacity. The guide includes a workbook which provides example templates for building components of a recreation services emergency plan.
