Description

Decision summaries of the Protection for Persons in Care Director contain information about allegations of abuse which have been the subject of investigation by an independent investigator, and decisions made by the Director. Publicly posting of the decision summaries began in April 2016 to promote transparency and to increase public awareness of the service providers’ accountability to the Protection for Persons in Care Act. Individually-identifiable health and other personal information are not included in the summaries, to protect all who were involved.

Continuing care health service standards (CCHSS) are a legislated requirement of operators pursuant to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act. The standards set the minimum requirement that operators in the continuing care system must comply with in the provision of publicly funded health care. The CCHSS direct requirements related to the provision of publicly funded health care in the continuing care system, applying to operators providing facility-based care in continuing care homes as well as those providing home and community care.

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, The Continuing Care Health Service Standards establish the minimum expectations in the provision of high quality, individualized health care services, provided to clients receiving publicly funded services from type 1 and type 2 home and community care providers residents of type A and type B continuing care homes. This includes assessed health and personal care services provided by nurses, therapists, health care aides and other health care professionals.

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed type A and type B continuing care home (formerly long-term care and designated supportive living, respectively) operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating type A and B continuing care homes. The standards direct operators of continuing care homes in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents. The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all type A and B continuing care home operators maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those continuing care homes. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating supportive living accommodations in Alberta. The standards direct operators of supportive living accommodations in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents.  The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all supportive living accommodations maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those accommodations. Specific serious events include those that are a health or safety risk to clients or residents, or may jeopardize the ability of the operator or provider to provide care. Use the Duty to Notify Decision Guide to determine if an incident is reportable.

Description

Promotes innovative design for continuing care homes (which includes long-term care and designated supportive living) and supportive living accommodations that provide continuing care services in Alberta. The overall goal of the resource is to integrate design concepts to facilitate the provision of quality accommodation and health care services within comfortable, safe, aesthetically pleasing, and home-like environments. All newly-constructed continuing care homes larger than 14 spaces that receive public funding must meet the standards outlined in this document. In cases of difference between these documents and national/provincial codes, the most restricted and higher requirements shall govern.
