In 2014 Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development released Alberta's Irrigation: A Strategy For The Future. The document included five key strategies which together laid out the department's blueprint for the future of the irrigation industry in Alberta. In an effort to manage and measure each of these strategies, an annual measurement and reporting of results was implemented.

The findings of this survey are intended to provide insight into the major issues facing groundwater management and governance in Canada and lead to improvements in how this resource is considered in the future.

The maps were recognized for their value to people involved in developing environmental farm plans who could use resource and environmental information on a broad scale.
