This report provides a detailed analysis of calculating ion balance (a parameter used to evaluate surface water and ground water quality) and recommends a new calculation approach that improves ion balance accuracy. The report is a resource for staff and other stakeholders, such as lab scientists and researchers, performing calculations during routine water analysis.

Description

This report is the first in a series of reports to examine data system quality issues in the health care system. It examines the number of cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) that were reported to the Alberta Communicable Disease Reporting System (CDRS) and to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Hospital Inpatient System – two data systems upon which many provincial and national health statistics are based. Results show a 3-4 fold difference in the reported cases of HUS between the two data systems in 1994-2003. Findings of this study have implications for the two data systems and for improved reporting of HUS and other diseases from the two systems.

Provides the procedures and guidelines to follow to meet the requirements of the Laboratory Data Quality Assurance Policy that went into effect on October 15, 2001. The policy requires that all facilities applying data required by an approval issued by Alberta Environment, or codes of practice, must ensure that a laboratory that meets accreditation standards analyzes the data. The purpose of the policy is to ensure the data received by the Alberta Environment is reliable, technically and legally defensible.

Data is becoming increasingly important in the healthcare environment. The significance of complete and accurately reported data is growing with its intensified use for research, epidemiological studies, outcomes and statistical analyses, evaluation of quality of care, strategic planning, and equitable funding allocations. The Alberta Inpatient Data Quality Re-abstraction Study was completed to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of inpatient data reported by the selected health regions and to identify areas for potential data quality enhancement.
