Description

This greenhouse gas emissions dataset shows area fugitive emission from tailings ponds and mine face at the oil sands mining facilities in Alberta. The data were reported between 2011 and 2021 under the Technology Innovation and Emission Reduction Regulation and preceding regulations in Alberta. The produced bitumen and the diluent flared/wasted volumes reported in the Alberta Energy Regulator's statistical report ST-39 are included in the dataset for reference.

This directive is to be applied for reporting under the Carbon Competitiveness Incentive Regulation, Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction Regulation, and Specified Gas Reporting Regulation.

Description

The scope of this protocol is limited to on-farm reductions of emissions from nitrogen sources and fuel use associated with the management of synthetic fertilizer, manure fertilizer and crop residues. Greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions associated with carbon sequestration in the soil and off-site emission reductions affected by the manufacture and distribution of nitrogen fertilizers are excluded from the protocol. The exclusion of off-site reductions of fertilizer manufacturing increases conservativeness in emission reduction calculations and limits the scope of quantification to those sources, sinks and/or reservoirs for which data are readily available.

This spreadsheet provides a summary of 2015-2017 data reported by facilities subject to the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation. The Regulation was passed in 2007 and expired December 31, 2017. Emissions were reported in units of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. Each facility was required to reduce its annual emissions intensity by a prescribed percentage target relative to its facility-specific approved baseline emissions intensity.

Description

Agricultural activities, including the production of livestock, result in greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Beef cattle, in particular, release methane (CH4) as a result of the digestion of feed materials in the rumen. These emissions are called enteric emissions and are a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities. Methane and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are also generated from manure storage and handling within beef cattle operations. These emissions are called manure emissions. This protocol for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in fed cattle addresses digestion and manure storage/handling sources of livestock greenhouse gas emissions. The protocol allows users to quantify greenhouse gas reductions using scientifically valid methodology and emission factors resulting from alterations in feeding strategies and other technologies in the finishing stages of beef cattle at feedlots in Alberta.
