This GIS dataset covers the four types of decontamination zones for whirling disease in Alberta, and identifies the inherent risk categories for each. These boundaries are to be used by Government of Alberta field staff and industry, as described in the Alberta Decontamination Protocol for Watercraft & Equipment. (1) Confirmed Red Zones are zones with CFIA confirmed positive testing for whirling disease and are based on a 'HUC 10' level as found in the Hydrologic Unit Coded Watersheds of Alberta dataset. Irrigation Red Zones are similar to confirmed red zones, however are based on Irrigation District boundaries and only apply to irrigation canals. (2) Yellow Zones represent high to moderate risk for the introduction/spread of whirling disease due to one or more of the following criteria: susceptible salmonid species present, high recreational activity/use and access to water, and high population base. Distribution (range) polygons were assembled by regional SARA biologists using the best available information, including COSEWIC status reports, recovery potential assessments, academic literature, and expert opinion. These spatial data support the protection, recovery and conservation of species listed as Extirpated, Endangered, Threatened or Special Concern under SARA. Species distributions are also described and displayed in Recovery Strategies, Action Plans and/or Management Plans. Discrepancies may exist between the distribution data shown in a species SARA recovery document and the current spatial data. Please contact DFO for more information on any data discrepancies. Please refer to the metadata included with the data for full entity attribute information

The Alberta Human Footprint Monitoring Program (AHFMP) is collaboration between the following organizations: Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) Alberta Energy (AE) Various non-government organizations. The goal of the AHFMP is to improve the accuracy of the human footprint data and to focus expertise from the various organizations on a single footprint product. Currently AEP and ABMI co-lead the program. The AHFMP stratifies footprint features into footprint sublayers based on logical groupings. Roads, oil and gas well pads, rail lines, gravel pits, agriculture fields are examples of sub layers. Where possible, the AHFMP will obtain features for these sub layers directly from authoritative sources. In some of these cases the data authority are responsible for the distribution of the sub-layer. Only when the features are not available...

The Peat Application Area dataset depicts available land which may contain peat resources, and the requirement of a peat application in Alberta. Areas where peat exploration is not allowed due to environmental concerns such as the presence of waterbodies and rivers, trumpeter swan lakes, parks and protected areas, key wildlife and biodiversity areas, caribou zones, and HUC 8 watersheds with bull trout and arctic grayling were removed. This generalized product represents areas where a peat harvesting application can be submitted.

Alberta Geological Survey offered to make available the data for the Wabamun Lake area in Alberta, Canada, which were assembled to develop a comprehensive model for studying CO2 geological storage. The Wabamun Lake area, southwest of Edmonton in central Alberta, was selected as the test area because a variety of favourable conditions identified it as a potential site for future, large-scale CO2 injection. Several large, industrial CO2 point sources are in the area, resulting in short transportation distances of the captured gas. Various deep saline formations with sufficient capacity to accept and store large volumes of CO2 in supercritical phase exist at the appropriate depth and are overlain by thick confining shale units.
