Description

This Act continues the Health Quality Council of Alberta and maintains the core mandate of the Council to study and report on the health system. The Act enables the Council to work within the health system on identifying and implementing improvements to the quality of health services in our province. The Council will continue as a corporation, and appointments to its board of directors will be made by Cabinet, not the Minister. The Act provides a new health system inquiry authority. While this authority is very similar and imports many provisions from the Public Inquiries Act, it has some special distinctions designed to make it more functional for the purpose of looking specifically into serious health system matters.

Description

The Animal Health Act enables the province to respond to animal diseases affecting animal health, public health, and food safety. The Act and its regulations are designed to control the spread of disease through inspections and surveillance, treatments, biosecurity measures, and control zones. The roles and duties of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (CPV) of Alberta and inspectors are outlined. The Act requires an owner of an animal or authorized person to advise the CPV of suspected or confirmed reportable and notifiable diseases within 24 hours.

This Act promotes safety on the province's highways, the definition of which includes any street, road, sidewalk or bridge that the public is ordinarily entitled or permitted to use. Part 1 provides for matters of general administration, including the appointment of a Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services; Part 2 for the establishment of the Alberta Transportation Safety Board and the conduct before it of hearings, reviews and appeals; Part 3 for matters of motor vehicle administration, including license, registration and insurance requirements; Part 4 for disqualifications from driving, including disqualifications arising from impaired driving and other offences; Part 5 for the general operation of vehicles, including their prohibited operation; Part 6 for off-highway vehicles; Part 6.1 for transportation network companies; Part 7 for commercial motor transport; and Part 8 for enforcement, rights, remedies and obligations.

The Insurance Act is the legislative framework for insurance operations in Alberta. The Act governs the licensing, governance and reporting requirements of insurance companies in the province, the incorporation and prudential supervision of provincial insurers, the duties of insurance agents and adjusters, market conduct, insurance contracts and financial responsibility cards ("pink" cards).
