The annual Irrigation Rehabilitation Program Status Report summarizes the expenditures and status of all IRP projects that were active during the construction period of August 1st to July 31st of a given year. The IRP began in 1969 and is a cost shared program between Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and Alberta’s 13 irrigation districts. Since 1969 funding levels have varied between $600,000 and $33,400,000.

The purpose of the procedures manual is to provide a comprehensive handbook on land classification for irrigation, and to enhance uniformity among land classifiers.. This fourth edition of the procedures manual was printed following an amendment to the Irrigation Districts Act, Irrigation General Regulation, on February 24, 2003, allowing Irrigation Council to specify which standards are acceptable for land assessment purposes. The land irrigability classes in the current Standards for the Classification of Land for Irrigation in the Province of Alberta are the basis for selection of land for irrigation development.

The publication"Irrigation in Alberta"provides an overview of irrigation development in the province, from the late 1800s through to its emergence into the 21st century. The distribution of the irrigation area primarily involves the 13 irrigation districts in southern Alberta (approximately 525,000 hectares), but also includes the "private irrigation" of more than 100,000 hectares of irrigated land as far north as the Peace River country. "Irrigation in Alberta" not only reviews the history and current operation of irrigation in the province but also examines the many spin-off benefits that arise due to the controlled availability of water and its prudent management. As can be seen in the overview, benefits not only accrue to irrigation water users, but also are available to other sectors of the public through increased economic and rural development, increased opportunity for recreational activities as well as through a commitment to wildlife habitat enhancement.
