Description

This environmental scan was conducted to provide information from Canadian and international sources on best and promising practices in the areas of family violence training for child intervention personnel. The scan was conducted as part of a collaborative research project conducted by Calgary Counselling Centre researchers in partnership with Alberta Human Services and The Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research. Results of the scan will be used to inform the development of a framework for advanced family violence training for child intervention staff in Alberta.

This literature review examines Canadian incident rates for domestic violence in child welfare cases, the co-occurrence of exposure to domestic violence and other forms of child maltreatment, current risk assessment tools, and safety planning practices used with families in which domestic violence is a concern. Family violence training programs for child intervention staff are reviewed and the best and promising practices are identified.
