This protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption, replaced by municipal solid waste on an equivalent energy potential basis. It also specifically includes reductions in GHG emissions due to any heat/power production and electricity generation related to the process, and from the avoidance of landfilling any organic materials which may be diverted for conversion to Biofuel.

This protocol is applicable to the quantification of reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the implementation of facilities that convert the energy in solar radiation into electrical energy as the end product. These cover several technologies and will be referred to simply as “solar electric facilities”. The protocol quantifies the emission reductions based on the generation of an equivalent quantity of electricity from fossil fuel based sources, either at grid-connected or off-grid facilities.

Henceforth, these facilities will be referred to as ‘run-of-river hydro’ and as ‘existing reservoir hydro’ electricity generation projects, respectively. The protocol quantifies the emission reductions based on the generation of an equivalent quantity of electricity from fossil fuel based sources, either at grid-connected or off-grid facilities. The protocol outlines the methodology used to calculate emission reductions that result from the use of an aerobic landfill bioreactor. The protocol applies to landfills or landfill cells which are at capacity and will not be accepting more waste materials, and are covered. Rather than the content being left to decompose anaerobically and producing methane, wells are drilled to aerate the waste and recirculate leachate. The resulting carbon dioxide emissions are considered as biogenic. The protocol is written for the aerobic landfill bioreactor project developer and assumes the reader has some familiarity with or general understanding of waste management practices including aerobic composting and the operation of a landfill.

This quantification protocol is written for the project developer completing gravel and lightly surfaced road rehabilitation. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets arises from the direct and indirect reduction of greenhouse gases emissions by reducing the use of fossil-fuel derived energy during the rehabilitation of gravel and lightly-surfaced roads. Projects applying this protocol achieve fuel savings from the recycling of recovered, processed aggregate from the existing road bed, reducing the amount of aggregate and binder needing to be sourced, processed and transported to the project site.

Description

This quantification protocol is applicable to the quantification of direct and indirect reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the implementation of waste heat recovery projects. The protocol quantifies the emission reductions from the avoidance of fossil fuel consumption resulting from the capture and utilization of heat that is currently being wasted. The waste heat may be transferred into the project site where it is utilized, or may be recovered and used within the project site. Project configurations where the waste heat is supplemented are also included.
