This Alberta Official Statistic describes the violent crime rates for Canada and provinces for the years from 1998 to 2014. The rate is based on the incidence of violent crime per 100,000 population in each province. The Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS), in co-operation with the policing community, collects police-reported crime statistics through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Survey. The UCR Survey was designed to measure the incidence of crime in Canadian society and its characteristics. UCR data reflect reported crime that has been substantiated by police. Information collected by the survey includes the number of criminal incidents, the clearance status of those incidents and persons-charged information. The UCR Survey produces a continuous historical record of crime and traffic statistics reported by every police agency in Canada since 1962. Alberta is divided into eight economic regions as follows: Lethbridge – Medicine -Hat; Camrose-Drumheller; Calgary; Banff – Jasper – Rocky Mountain House; Red Deer; Edmonton; Athabasca – Grande Prairie – Peace River; and Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake. Mother tongue refers to the first language learned at home in childhood and still understood by the person on May 10, 2011. Non-official languages are languages other than English or French. According to the 2011 census, 77.8% of Albertans reported English as their mother tongue, followed by a non-official language (20.1%), and French (2.1%). The sex ratio is the ratio of males to females in a given population, usually expressed as the number of males for every 100 females. The sex ratio at birth in most countries is about 105 or 106 males per 100 females. After birth, sex ratios vary because of different patterns of mortality and migration for males and females within the population. Dependency ratio (age dependency ratio) is the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (generally under age 15 and over age 64) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 - 64 years) in a population. Alberta is divided into eight economic regions as follows: Lethbridge – Medicine -Hat; Camrose-Drumheller; Calgary; Banff – Jasper – Rocky Mountain House; Red Deer; Edmonton; Athabasca – Grande Prairie – Peace River; and Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake. The economic regions of Calgary and Edmonton account for the largest proportion (69.0%) of Alberta’s population. This Alberta Official Statistic uses a 5-year extended Facility Condition Index (FCI) value to report the physical condition of government owned or supported facilities. The FCI was adopted as a common measure to enhance reporting by enabling the Ministry of Infrastructure to compare condition ratings across facility types (health facilities, schools, post-secondary institutions and government owned facilities). The FCI is a ratio of the cost to address current and future (five year) maintenance needs, relative to facility replacement value. FCI’s are translated to good, fair and poor ratings based on the “interpretation of FCI Values” stated below. The percentages are calculated by taking the square metres of all facilities in good, fair or poor condition (as defined by FCI) and dividing each by the total area of all buildings within each facility type.
