Description

This planning document presents the GOA's resource management policy for the public lands and resources within the area. It is intended to be a guide for resource managers, industry and the public with responsibility or interest in the area, rather than a regulatory mechanism. Resource potentials and opportunities for development are identified with a view to assisting in the economic progress of Alberta. The plan is sufficiently flexible so that all future proposals for land use and development may be considered.

Description

Sandhill habitats contain a major concentration of significant features, including numerous rare, threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Based on recommendations from previous studies on reptiles and amphibians and rare plants in Alberta's grasslands and parkland natural regions, a broad study on sandhill habitats was undertaken in 1987. The study area encompassed all sand plains and sandhill habitats from the Red Deer River south to the United States boundary, west to highway 2 and east to the Saskatchewan border. In addition, several sites north of the Red Deer River north to the David Lake area were investigated. Research in 1987 was undertaken on rare, threatened and endangered wildlife and plants. Rare, threatened and endangered plants were studied to map their distributions, and to assess the degree to which dune stabilization was occurring and how this affected native plants. This report is also to document the 1988 revision to the timber damage assessment charge and is related Forest Stand Damage Table.

These forest inventory specifications were developed and field tested in 1987. The main purpose of the inventory was to provide reliable volume estimates and location of the aspen timber resources within the White Area of the province. This document provides an overview of and rationale for the development of the inventory, and establishes procedures and guidelines for the interpretation of aerial photography that could be used to develop the inventory.

A biophysical inventory of several contiguous land parcels adjacent to or near Coyote Lake, Leduc County, Alberta, was completed in 1987. The total area involved was 647.5 ha. The inventory included a description of the physical environment, which was based on a literature review; field identification analyses of vegetation types; an assessment of the mamma, bird, amphibian, reptile and fish fauna; vertebrate fauna; mapping of the vegetation types; photographs and documentation of rare species and new records of distribution; and recommendations for future studies.
