Description

Surface water quality management frameworks are a key component of Alberta's cumulative effects management system. These frameworks are designed to monitor, evaluate and proactively manage the cumulative effects of human activity on ambient surface water quality in Alberta's major rivers. This report provides a summary of the feedback received during engagement processes undertaken to support the development of the Upper Athabasca Region Surface Water Quality Management Framework.

Presents nine recommendations made to the government by the Métis Women's Council on Economic Security in 2017, and the related government responses to the recommendations. Recommendations cover the child intervention system, safety for Indigenous women, support for Indigenous people transitioning to urban centres, Indigenous tourism, social justice, collaboration in the development of government programs and services, and entrepreneurial and employment opportunities resulting from the legalization of cannabis. The Council was established in 2013 to provide advice and recommendations to the Government of Alberta on strategies to improve the economic security of Indigenous women in Alberta.

The report examines the continued over-representation of Indigenous children and families in the child intervention system. The Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency collaborated with Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures to conceptualize and deliver the Environmental Monitoring Technician Training Program pilot for 15 representatives from eight Indigenous communities. The five-week training pilot focused on safety, water quality monitoring and wildlife monitoring. This report describes what occurred during the pilot, and how it can be replicated to build further capacity in Indigenous communities.
