Description

This Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) dataset describes the monthly Income Support caseload in Alberta, including two client groups: those Expected to Work (ETW) and those who have Barriers to Full Employment (BFE). Income Support provides financial benefits to individuals and families who do not have the resources to meet their basic needs, like food, clothing, and shelter. The caseload is defined as the number of households categorized as ETW or BFE during a specific reporting period. Most commonly, this is reported as the average volume for a specific period (e.g., annually).   The composition of the caseload is made up of single individuals, lone-parent families, couples with children and couples without children. Lists municipal tax rates, expressed as a mill rate, for Alberta municipalities. The Mill rate is the amount of tax payable per dollar of the assessed value of a property. The mill rate is based on 'mills'; as each mill is one-thousandth of a currency unit, one mill is equivalent to one-tenth of a cent or $0.001. Property tax in dollar terms is calculated by multiplying the assessed property value and the mill rate and dividing by 1,000. As a property may be subject to tax by a number of different authorities, mill rates are set by each taxing authority so as to meet the revenue projections in their budgets.

The level and nature of support a family receives varies depending on many factors such as the child’s disability and the family’s individual circumstances.   The data goes back to 2018/19 Quarter 1 (April to June) and tracks the cost of accessing services from the FSCD program by service categories (e.g. family support, child-focused services, behavioural/developmental supports, specialized services, and out of home placement) across the province on a quarterly basis.
