Alberta’s decontamination protocol helps ensure the proper cleaning of watercraft and other equipment used in water to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species and fish disease. The revised Decontamination Protocol will better protect Alberta waters by providing clear directions for realistic decontamination methods that can be applied by a wide range of users. It is important to have consistent direction on practices for cleaning of equipment after it has come in contact with water and before moving to different waters.

Presents an enhanced sampling design for deployment in the Lower Athabasca River. It represents one component of work to describe baseline environmental conditions in the Lower Athabasca River prior to the potential release of coke slurry-treated oil sands process affected water (OSPW). The document describes sampling locations and sampling frequency to establish a comprehensive description of baseline environmental conditions in surface water chemistry, benthic sediments, benthic algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, and small-bodied fish.

In August 2017, the Government of Alberta Decontamination Protocol was introduced as a management strategy to reduce the spread of whirling disease and other aquatic invasive species and fish diseases. In 2018 Alberta Environment and Parks began work to expand the decontamination protocols to include industrial operations working in or near water in Alberta. A draft policy and tracking template were developed. This record contains the draft documents and background materials provided to elicit informed public feedback through an online survey and public information sessions during the Fall of 2018.

The workshop outcomes include a number of recommended changes to monitoring network design.

Reports on two studies developed to address science needs and gaps related to groundwater-surface water interactions on tributaries of the Lower Athabasca River and proximate to tailings ponds. The studies address to sub-themes of the groundwater theme identified in the Joint Canada-Alberta Oil Sands Monitoring program regarding water quality of the Lower Athabasca River, namely: What is the relative importance and contribution of groundwater quality and quantity to surface waters? and: Is there groundwater seepage from tailings ponds and/or other oil sands industrial operations entering the surface water system?
