This paper assesses the magnitude of margin losses by Alberta hog producers in the period 2008 to 2012 that could have been reduced or avoided had they used certain business risk management strategies. Three price risk management strategies are analysed and compared to selling hogs in the cash market: routine hedging, selective hedging, and forward contracting. In addition, the Hog Price Insurance Program offered by Agriculture Financial Services Corporation is evaluated for the September 2012 hog contract settlement.

This resource provides the conclusions and recommendations of the Nutrient Beneficial Management Practices Evaluation Project, a six-year research project (2007-2012) to evaluate nutrient beneficial management practices at field and watershed scales in Alberta. Beneficial management practices are defined as conservation practices, management techniques, or social actions that minimize potential negative effects on the environment while being practical for producers to meet or exceed regulatory requirements and meet production targets.

Weeds listed in the Alberta Weed Control Act as prohibited noxious and noxious are a threat to Alberta's environment, economy and society, and have the potential to degrade habitats, reduce biodiversity, increase erosion, cause wildfires, reduce property value, create obstacles to international trade and cause reduction in productivity of agricultural land. Under the Alberta Weed Control Act, prohibited noxious weeds need to be destroyed.

However, rural communities can attract and retain population by promoting the benefits of living and working in smaller communities (e.g., employment opportunities, lower living expenses, safe neighborhoods and access to community health and recreation services). This document was developed as a resource guide to assist rural communities in Alberta wishing to attract and retain population to address their long-term economic needs. The document includes information and links to web based resources, initiatives and programs. The document contains information on some best practices that have been developed by other countries. The document also reviews the literature on benefits, challenges and strategic options to attract and retain population in rural communities.

This manual provide the bulk milk grader with the legislative requirements, policies and procedures involved in the collection of quality raw milk from a licensed dairy farm in Alberta. A working knowledge of this information is part of the requirement for a bulk milk grader licence in Alberta. A bulk mild grader is responsible for taking samples of a producer's raw milk for the purposes of monitoring food safety on behalf of the government and Alberta Milk. The samples are used for determining the raw milk’s quality, components, and obtaining data to determine the milk grade. Raw milk refers to milk that has not been pasteurized. The bulk milk grader is responsible for accepting or rejecting the raw milk at a dairy farm.
