This Guide supports Alberta Education's objective of providing consistent direction, provides information about ECS to Grade 12 programs and delivery, communicates information to organize and operate Alberta schools and serves as the key policy repository for the Ministry. The Guide will be of particular interest to administrators, guidance counsellors, student advisors, teachers and other educators.

Requirements contained in this document apply to grades 1-12 special education in public and separate school boards, including Francophone regional education authorities, but excluding charter schools, in accordance with Ministerial Order 015/2004 and are effective September 1, 2004. Standards for Special Education, Amended June 2004 supports Alberta Learning's Business Plan goal to have high quality learning opportunities that ensure the learning system meets the needs of all learners and society.

Selon Les normes en matière d’adaptation scolaire, les conseils scolaires sont tenus d’adopter des programmes efficaces pour les élèves de la 1re à la 12e année ayant des besoins scolaires spéciaux, puis d’en assurer la prestation. Dans ce document, des pratiques d’enseignement uniformes et de plus grande qualité sont préconisées pour les élèves de notre province, de sorte que, peu importe où se situent les élèves, les élèves ayant des besoins scolaires spéciaux puissent avoir accès à des programmes et à des services pertinents.
