Description

Presents the Government of Alberta's resource management policy for the public lands and resources within the region, which covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometres of mainly forest-covered mountains and foothills on the eastern slopes of Alberta's Rocky mountains. It is intended to be a guide to resource managers, industry and publics having responsibilities or interests in the area rather than a regulatory mechanism. Resource potentials and opportunities for development are identified with a view to assisting in the economic progress of Alberta.

Description

The Policy on Consultation with Metis Settlements on Land and Natural Resource Management was developed in consultation with the Metis Settlements General Council and a working group of Settlement leaders, as well as industry stakeholders. It establishes a formal consultation process between Alberta, project proponents and the Metis Settlements. The policy came into force on April 4, 2016 and was amended in April 2020. Implementation of the policy is consistent with Alberta's approach to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

The Government of Alberta’s Policy on Consultation with Metis Settlements on Land and Natural Resource Management, 2015 (Policy) was released in the Spring of 2016. To fully implement the Policy, the Government of Alberta has developed these Guidelines, along with sector-specific consultation matrices (Appendix A of this document). The Guidelines were modeled after the First Nation consultation guidelines, and support clarity of roles, transparency and consistency for all stakeholders involved in the consultation process.

The intent of the Common Risk Management Framework (CRMF) is to provide a comprehensive risk assessment and management approach to identifying and managing common risks within the Integrated Resource Management (IRM) System. For many years, Alberta has extensively developed its energy minerals. However, the province also possesses a wide range of other minerals: base and precious metals, gemstones and industrial minerals. To enhance the economic benefit of these resources for all Albertans, Alberta's throne speech for 1999/2000 committed the government to develop a policy on non-energy minerals, streamline the administration of mining regulations, and improve geological information on minerals. Alberta Energy assembled a team from across government to establish the strategies for meeting these commitments. This document presents the results of the work of this team, which is a framework that outlines the vision, goals and strategic directions for ensuring orderly, environmentally responsible mineral exploration and development in Alberta.
