On October 23, 2015, the Government of Alberta recognized the City of Calgary for its efforts towards creating an age-friendly community for residents. Age-friendly communities promote healthy and active aging. People in age-friendly communities are supported in maintaining their independence, and can access public buildings and amenities, participate in community events and initiatives, and acquire the supports and services they need.

The initiative is capital grant program that provides funding to develop long-term care and affordable supportive living spaces. Funding is made available to not-for-profit organizations, Métis settlements, housing management bodies, local housing authorities, faith-based organizations, community groups, municipalities and private sector organizations.
