This fact sheet aimed at product produces provides an overview for of Alberta's new extended producer responsibility (EPR) system. The EPR system shifts the physical and financial burden of collecting, sorting, processing and recycling waste to product producers and away from local governments and taxpayers. The new EPR system will focus on single-use products, packaging and paper products, as well as hazardous and special products.

This fact sheet provides an overview of Alberta's new extended producer responsibility (EPR) system, which shifts the physical and financial burden of collecting, sorting, processing and recycling waste to product producers and away from local governments and taxpayers. Alberta’s government is working on bringing extended producer responsibility (EPR) to the province. An EPR framework would create provincial systems for managing single-use plastics, packaging, paper products and hazardous and special products like household pesticides and solvents. This What We Heard document summarizes the key findings received to date to inform EPR in Alberta, and serves as an update to stakeholders and Albertans on the progress to date towards EPR.
