Alberta’s Drought Response Plan is designed to help government, irrigators, communities, businesses and others respond quickly and effectively to drought. The objective of each action in the plan is to protect the health and safety of Albertans from the impacts of drought. This information sheet explains the five stages of drought response and drought response tools.

Alberta's Drought Response Plan is a multi-stage roadmap, covering everything from conservation plans and water-sharing agreements to declaring an emergency and prioritizing water for human health and safety. The plan outlines: five stages of Alberta's drought response; the roles and responsibilities of partners, including government, to help everyone collaborate and communicate; regulatory and non-regulatory approaches and tools that may be used in various drought conditions; and how and when emergencies would be declared as a last resort.
