Bill 35, Tax Statutes (Creating Jobs and Driving Innovation) Amendment Act, 2020, received Royal Assent on December 9, 2020. The bill includes the addition of Division 7 to Part 6 of the Alberta Corporate Tax Act in order to implement the new Innovation Employment Grant (IEG). This special notice from Tax and Revenue Administration provides information on the IEG, which is effective January 1, 2021.

The Government of Alberta recognizes the challenges that corporations are facing in these exceptional times and will continue to take action to support Alberta businesses. Further to the federal Time Limits and Other Periods Act (COVID-19) and associated Ministerial Orders made by the Government of Canada, Alberta will also be extending the filing deadlines for claims for the Alberta SR&ED tax credit and extensions of time to file a Notice of Objection.

Description

Further to the deferral of corporate income tax payments explained in Special Notice Vol. 5 No. 56, Deferral of Corporate Income Tax Payments, Alberta corporations with income tax balances owing on or after March 18, 2020, or installment payments due between March 18, 2020 and September 30, 2020, may defer making these payments until September 30, 2020 (formerly August 31, 2020). Penalties and interest will not be charged if the payments are made by the extended deadline of September 30, 2020. TRA will waive arrears interest accruing from March 18, 2020 to September 30, 2020 on existing debts owing pursuant to the Alberta Corporate Tax Act. Note: this special notice amends special notice Vol. 5 No. 56.

As announced in Special Notice Vol. 5 No. 52, Job Creation Tax Cut, the general income tax rate on businesses was scheduled to be reduced from 10% to 9% effective January 1, 2021, and then to 8% effective January 1, 2022. However, as part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, the Job Creation Tax Cut will be accelerated in order to decrease the general income tax rate on businesses from 10% to 8%, effective July 1, 2020.
