This document outlines the unique considerations relevant to managing Castle Provincial Park and Castle Wildland Provincial Park within the context of the system of Alberta's provincial parks. In the plan, each issue is given context, management objectives are identified and corresponding strategies are provided. The management plan is designed to provide a long term and comprehensive framework to guide both park operations and park developments. It has been produced in consultation with Albertans, stakeholders and First Nations, and is intended to help achieve sustainable protection of the valuable natural and cultural resources, and to provide the foundation for long-term economic benefits to the people of Alberta.

This report summarizes the scientific evidence for ecological responses of soil, vegetation, hydrology, and wildlife to human activities in the Castle region of southwestern Alberta, based on over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and technical reports. While most of these studies were conducted elsewhere, many of their findings are relevant to the Castle region and biogeographically similar regions in Alberta.

The draft concept plan provides background information and outlines the management and development intents for the proposed Saskatoon Mountain Provincial Recreation Area. It proposes that recreational trail use, both motorized and non-motorized, be offered, and that the current hunting regime continue with the addition of hunters requiring a firearms discharge permit. Proposed facility development includes designated OHV trails, non-motorized multi-use trails for activities such as hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing, a campground and an upgraded day-use area. The plan also recognizes the conservation values of the site and proposes to protect the areas of highest conservation value.

Rochon Sands Provincial Park, on the south side of Buffalo Lake in south-central Alberta, is located 24 km northwest of Stettler. Ecologically it is found in the Aspen Parkland. These studies, conducted annually between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2011, present information on the distribution and status of lepidopteran (moth and butterfly) species in the park.

Tolman Bridge, is located in the valley of the Red Deer River, 18 km (10 miles) east of the town of Trochu. The bridge and adjoining Park land are in the north half of section 14, range 22, township 34, west of the Fourth Meridian. The coordinates at the bridge are 51.503N and 113.009W. The elevation ranges from around 600 m at the river to 800 m or so near the top of the river breaks. In a Natural Area Inspection Report dated 25 June 1982 and in the 1989 Trochu 82 P/14, 1:50,000 topographic map, the land southwest of the bridge was designated as the “Tolman Bridge Municipal Park” while that southeast of the bridge was referred to as the “Tolman Bridge Recreation Area”. In an Alberta, Department of the Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Division paper dated 9 May 2000, the areas on both sides of the river are included in “Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park”. Campgrounds are found in both areas and they are patrolled by a Conservation Officer stationed in Drumheller.

The Lepidoptera of the area was studied on 13 different days (30 trap nights) from June 27 to August 15 in the years 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. All collected specimens were databased and information on most is available on the Virtual Museum website of the University of Alberta Strickland Museum (http://www.entomology.ualberta.ca/). No collections were made in the spring or fall and thus many species remain to be documented.

The purpose of the project Learning a Language, Learning the Land was to pilot an educational process with immigrant newcomers that combined language learning and environmental literacy in an outdoor park setting. This report is an evaluation of the joint project between the primary partners - Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (Parks Division, Learning and Stewardship Services – herein called Alberta Parks), Edmonton Mennonite Centre for New Comers (EMCN, English Language Program) and the City of Edmonton (Natural Areas Conservation – herein called Edmonton Parks). The project was initially funded by the Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association (ECALA) with additional funding provided by the Government of Alberta, City of Edmonton, Edmonton Centre for Newcomers, and Mountain Equipment Co-op. An ecological survey of the Park by Kondla & Smith (1972) came up with an impressive 148 species of birds, 25 of mammals, and 225 of flowering plants. Later studies by Wallis (1977), Nordstrom and Wilkinson (1980), Campbell (1983) and Lohr (1993) have added to these totals. The present report incorporates all information in the earlier reports (Bird 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) as well as making a few corrections and adding new information based on studies carried out in 2005.

It will also provide information that will assist in preparing annual operating plans and budgets.
