Environmental assessment registry documents pertaining to the proposed St. Mary River Irrigation District Chin Reservoir Expansion project. Chin Reservoir is an off-stream storage reservoir that is located roughly in the middle of St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) irrigation network, approximately 30 kilometers (km) east of Lethbridge and 15 km south of Taber. The Chin Reservoir Expansion Project (the Project) involves the construction of a new dam which would result in a larger reservoir. The new dam would be approximately 40 meters (m) in height and is expected to inundate (flood) approximately 650 hectares (ha) of privately held land within Chin Coulee. In summer of 2012, the Government of Alberta approved the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan and with it, three environmental management frameworks that aim to manage the cumulative effects of different activities in the region. The Groundwater Management Framework outlines a strategy for monitoring, evaluating and reporting changes in groundwater conditions, and identifies management actions that may be taken when such changes are observed. This supporting document provides summary information about the geology and hydrogeology of the Cold Lake Beaver River area, providing a basis for understanding groundwater conditions.

One of the alternatives was teh "local supply" option which would have involved construction of a weir on the outlet of Cold Lake in Saskatchewan and the subsequent withdrawal of up to 2.45M2 of water from the lake.
