According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed type A and type B continuing care home (formerly long-term care and designated supportive living, respectively) operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating type A and B continuing care homes. The standards direct operators of continuing care homes in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents. The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all type A and B continuing care home operators maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those continuing care homes. Pursuant to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, adherence with the Accommodation Standards – Continuing Care Home is a mandated requirement for type A and B continuing care home (formerly long-term care and designated supportive living, respectively) operators in Alberta. The Accommodation Standards - Continuing Care Homes provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating type A and B continuing care homes. The accommodation standards establish the minimum standards of accommodation services, such as meals, building maintenance, security, and housekeeping, social or leisure activities, and resident and family involvement to promote safety, security, and quality of life for clients and residents.

According to the Continuing Care Regulation under the Continuing Care Act, all licensed supportive living operators are legally required to follow the provincial standards. The accommodation standards provide the standards for voluntary, public, and private organizations operating supportive living accommodations in Alberta. The standards direct operators of supportive living accommodations in the delivery of quality accommodation services to residents.  The purpose of the accommodation standards is to ensure that all supportive living accommodations maintain a high quality of accommodation services that promote the safety, security, and quality of life for Albertans living in those accommodations. In November 1999, the Long Term Care Review Policy Advisory Committee released the report Healthy Aging: New Directions for Care. The Committee report and additional public input and suggestions were thoroughly reviewed by Alberta Health and Wellness, and in April 2000 the government released its response to the report. Entitled Strategic Directions and Future Actions: Healthy Aging and Continuing Care in Alberta, the report presented a government strategy to develop an improved, sustainable and affordable continuing care system for Albertans. This report, Tracking Progress, shows the progress to date in each of the strategic directions set out in the government’s response, and summarizes future plans to keep continuing care reform moving forward.
