This report gives a brief history of the development of the Mount Watt and Fort Vermilion area, in the northwestern portion of the Peace River district in northern Alberta. It describes the climate and major physical features, gives the morphological and chemical characteristics of the soils, and discusses certain aspects of land use. Appendices are included for the classification of the soils and the terminology for describing the soils. The soil map shows the location and extent of the different soil areas and indicates the main topographical features. The soil rating map separates the more productive land from the less productive agricultural land and serves as a guide to future agricultural development.

The soil map included with the report shows the location and extent of the different soil areas and indicates the main topographic features. The soil rating map indicates the better land from the poorer land and serves as a guide to future agricultural development.

This report describes the soils of the Buck Lake and the Wabamun Lake areas, which lie geographically adjacent in the west central portion of Alberta and are characterized by somewhat similar soils. The publication includes colored soil maps and soil rating maps. The soil maps show the location and distribution of the various soil areas and the associated topographical features. The soil rating maps are interpretive maps in which the main landscape features, soils and topography, are evaluated and given a relative productivity rating.

Exploratory soil surveys by helicopter, conducted by the soil survey section of the Research Council of Alberta, were initiated in 1955, but the first two projects completed were not previously described in published reports. This resource reports on the results of the 1956 survey. Information gathered by these surveys can be used to determine timber possibilities, for outlining the areas which may be suitable for future agricultural development, and for the planning of roads which could be utilized for mineral prospecting and other developments. During 1956 the exploratory soil survey covered Alberta map sheets 83-O, 83-P, and 73-M.
