Description

This wildlife status report looks at the plains spadefoot is currently on Alberta's 'blue list' of species that may be at risk of declining to non-viable population levels in the province. This nocturnal toad spends most of its time underground, only emerging to breed during fabourable conditions or to feed. Observational records are therefore rare. This report reviews information on the plains spadefoot in Alberta, as a step in updating its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This wildlife status report looks at the red-tailed chipmunk, a small rodents that are found in the montane and subalpine regions of Waterton Lakes National Park and the West Castle Valley. There are two recognized subspecies of red-tailed chipmunks and southwestern Alberta is the northern range limit of one of these subspecies. Populations of both subspecies are probably secure on a continental basis, but they may be vulnerable to declines in the northern portions of their ranges. At higher concentrations, ground-level ozone has adverse human health effects, and is one of the most damaging air pollutants to vegetation. In Canada, federal, provincial and territorial governments are in the process of reviewing ambient national objectives as well as setting new Canada-wide standards for ozone. Available ambient ozone monitoring information from Alberta has been reviewed, and government agencies, industries and associations involved in monitoring ozone and its precursors have been identified. Also, published literature from Alberta after 1980 has been reviewed.

These guidelines provide information as to how the regulation is administered by the Dam Safety and Water Projects Branch of Alberta Environmental Protection. These guidelines were originally published in February 1979 and updated in January 1983.
