Over the past three years, government has undertaken several province-wide engagement initiatives -- Inspiring Education, Inspiring Action, Speak Out and Setting the Direction, to help shape Alberta's vision for education. Each of these initiatives has contributed to the ongoing renewal of Alberta's education system and influenced the proposed new education legislation. The proposed Act is designed to enable the transformation of Alberta's education system by providing a foundation and expectations for educational excellence. Albertans were invited to participate in the process by expressing their views in community meetings, in writing, or through social media (see consultation methods below). All of the thoughts and suggestions Albertans provided are being considered during the drafting of new legislation to govern Alberta?s education system, which will be introduced in the Legislature in spring 2012. Over the past three years, government has engaged Albertans in wide-ranging conversations about the future of education in Alberta. Three major initiatives included: Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans; Setting the Direction for Special Education in Alberta, and; Speak Out: The Alberta Student Engagement Initiative. Each of these has played a part in painting a picture of what the future of education should look like. Why is this important to parents and students, to business and the community, to the education system and to government? The upcoming series of meetings are government's opportunity to check in with the public to make certain we are on track to getting the future right for our children.

Section 16(2) of the Government Accountability Act requires organizations under the jurisdiction of government ministries to prepare business plans and annual reports for each fiscal year "in the form and at a time acceptable to the Minister." Section 78 of the School Act requires school authorities to use accountability information and report it to students, parents and the public in a manner the minister prescribes. This guide has been prepared to assist Alberta's accredited-funded private school authorities in preparing, updating and reporting on their three-year education plans. Plans and reports for the private schools align with and build on Alberta Education's vision, mission, goals and outcomes for the basic education system. In this way, they help ensure that the entire education system is focused on key priorities that meet the educational needs of Alberta students. This document provides the requirements for: Jurisdiction and school three-year education plans for 2008-2011. These plans cover the 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11 school years. The due date for jurisdiction plans has been extended to June 20, 2008. Jurisdiction and school Annual Education Results Reports on the 2007/08 school year, based on the three-year education plans for 2007-2010. Jurisdiction reports are due on November 30, 2008.
