Description

Anaerobic decomposition of organic waste materials in a landfill generates gases that contain approximately 60 per cent methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG). The amount of methane emitted from a landfill can be reduced through the installation of landfill gas capture and combustion technology to convert the methane to carbon dioxide. Combustion with energy recovery further reduces GHG emissions by displacing fossil fuel sourced energy to generate heat and electricity. This document presents the methodology for quantifying methane emission reductions which result from the use of one or both of these methods of reducing methane emissions.
