Description

The Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory was initiated in 1949 and completed by 1956. The Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory included all publicly owned forested lands in the province except Indian lands, national parks, and an area known as the Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve. The Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory was used to define lands suitable for agriculture, to determine timber harvest levels and plan forest protection and timber and industrial development. Through aerial photo interpretation, land was classified as productive, potentially productive, or non-productive. On productive forest land, homogeneous groups of trees were classified by 'cover types'. Cover types included crown density, height and tree species. Burned, harvested or cultivated land was identified as potentially productive. Non-productive lands included areas with organic soils, barren rock and lakes. No ages or site classes are associated with the polygons. The minimum polygon size was 65 ha....

The Phase 2, or Detailed, Forest Inventory is the second provincial level forest inventory conducted in the province of Alberta. The Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory (initiated in 1949 and completed by 1956) preceded the Detailed Inventory. The Phase 2 (Detailed) Forest Inventory was undertaken to cover lands where commercial timber commitments existed that were not inventoried as part of the Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory. The Phase 2 (Detailed) Forest Inventory utilized aerial photography from 1956 to 1966 to capture attribution similar to the Phase 1 (Broad Scale) Forest Inventory but at a more detailed level. A minimum stand size of 16.2 ha (40 acres) was used and the information was largely mapped at a scale of 1:31 680. Detailed information collected through the Phase 2 Inventory included species composition, stand density, stand heights, site class and the maturity or year of stand establishment. This dataset is produced for the Government of Alberta and is available to the general public. Please consult the Distribution Information of this metadata on how to acquire this dataset. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI) represents the Government of Alberta's comprehensive biophysical, anthropogenic and land-use inventory of the southernmost portion of the province's White Area. The compilation of the inventory commenced in 2006 in the southeast corner of the province using digital colour-infrared stereo photography. Data capture has proceeded north and west. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory is intended as an update to the Native Prairie Vegetation Inventory (NPVI) that was completed circa 1993. The Grassland Vegetation Inventory product is a more comprehensive and detailed geospatial representation of land cover that is intended to meet a multitude of business needs integral to land-use planning and management in Alberta. Distribution (range) polygons were assembled by regional SARA biologists using the best available information, including COSEWIC status reports, recovery potential assessments, academic literature, and expert opinion. These spatial data support the protection, recovery and conservation of species listed as Extirpated, Endangered, Threatened or Special Concern under SARA. Species distributions are also described and displayed in Recovery Strategies, Action Plans and/or Management Plans. Discrepancies may exist between the distribution data shown in a species SARA recovery document and the current spatial data. Please contact DFO for more information on any data discrepancies.
