Alberta Municipal Affairs produces 13 measures related to specific aspects of a municipality’s governance, finances or community. The following resources provides a year over year analysis of indicator results as a function of municipalities. This analysis is provided for informational purposes only and users are encouraged to check out the Municipal Indictors Reports under the related tab before drawing conclusions from this data.

Description

In Alberta, equalized assessment is the means of comparing property wealth in a uniform manner for all municipalities. Alberta uses an ad valorem assessment and tax system where property taxes are based on wealth and wealth is measured by the value of property expressed as an assessment. Equalizing an assessment is simply a process of adjusting each municipality's taxable assessment to a common year in accordance with current legislation and policy. The equalization process results in a common provincial assessment base that is used to determine the amount of requisition for each requisitioning body.

Description

The annual datasets in this record include financial information (revenues and expenditures) and output measures for public libraries and public library systems in Alberta. Financial details are compiled from financial reports filed by each library board, while statistics related to public library service delivery are compiled from annual reports submitted by each public library board to Municipal Affairs. A separate annual dataset contains information on local appropriations received by library boards from their municipal councils for operations.

Description

From 1913 to 2019, Municipal Affairs produced the Municipal Affairs Population List that contained population counts for Alberta municipalities, Metis Settlements, and First Nations communities based on the most recent municipal or federal census. In 2020, the Municipal Affairs Population List was discontinued following the repeal of the Determination of Population Regulation. With the approval of the new Municipal Census Regulation in 2023, Municipal Affairs resumed the publication of the Municipal Affairs Population List.

The SIR provides basic municipal statistics including population, assessment and tax rate information.

The Municipal Officials Directory contains up-to-date contact information on municipal officials for Alberta municipalities, Special Areas, Metis Settlements, regional services commissions, local government associations, and other organizations. The Municipal Officials Search website also includes a Word version of the directory and links to additional municipal contact lists and a summary of the recent changes to them. A search engine is also provided to search by name, official type, local authority name, and local authority type.
