Description

Extended periods of extreme cold (below -38°C) can cause up to 95 per cent mortality of over-wintering mountain pine beetles, which is required to suppress populations. These maps display predicted per cent mortality, based on a mountain pine beetle overwinter mortality model used by the province to predict per cent mortality based on winter temperatures and location data. These mortality predictions, combined with aerial surveys and ground assessments conducted in August/September, help the province prioritize areas for single tree treatment and timber harvest control tactics implemented in the fall and winter.
