This annual report provides statistical information of workplace injuries, diseases and fatalities in Alberta for the year in review. The data in this report gives a picture of specific provincial workplace injury and illness patterns, which the government uses to help evaluate and improve evidence-based prevention measures.

Contains research data collected in support of a 2017 study to pilot and benchmark potential performance measures for the internal responsibility system (IRS) and identify which measures are associated with injury rates. The study is based upon an online poll conducted between March 24 and April 5, 2017 on behalf of the researchers by a commercial polling company. The respondents comprised 2,000 Albertans engaged in paid employment in the previous 12 months.

The Inspections Evaluation Analytical Dataset is an administrative dataset structured at the level of the employer-industry-year-month using a combination of data from employer and claim-level workers compensation data, and OHS regulatory enforcement activity. The underlying data were provided to the Partnership for Work, Health and Safety (PWHS) by the Alberta Workers Compensation Board (WCB) and the Government of Alberta for the purposes of conducting an evaluation of the effect of regulatory enforcement activities on firm-level injury rates.

An objective of the study was to investigate whether these practices are related to workplace injury rates. Another objective of the study was to provide Alberta organizations with recommendations on how to enhance occupational safety.

The dataset links data from two sources of information: (1) individuals with executive titles in a sample of small to medium- sized enterprises in Alberta were surveyed in 2016 and 2018 about their organization's human resource management practices, and (2) archival organizational-level injury data from Alberta Workers' Compensation Board from 2014 to 2019. Thus, the purpose of this dataset is to connect human resource management practices with injury data at the organizational level in a sample of small- to medium- sized enterprises in Alberta over time. The function of this dataset is to provide greater understanding of potential organizational-level predictors of occupational safety. The variables from the survey were removed prior to posting publicly; contact the researcher for more information.

This report summarizes the results of a 2017 study of the occupational health and safety experiences of 2,000 workers in Alberta. The purpose was to pilot and benchmark potential performance measures for the internal responsibility system (IRS) and identify which measures are associated with injury rates. The study also aimed to determine the degree to which workers are able to exercise their safety rights under the IRS. An internal responsibility system is a way of sharing responsibility for health and safety between everyone in a workplace. The basic logic of the IRS is that workplace parties are best placed to identify and control hazards and have a common interest in doing do. For this reason, self-regulation is expected to be an effective way to reduce hazard exposures and, ultimately, injuries.
