The diverse habitats found in the Park have allowed a wide variety of plant life to flourish. A number of species that are rare in the province, and in Canada, are protected within the Park. Managing common insects, weeds, plant diseases and certain animal pests found in the backyard can be a challenge. However, there are a number of ways to approach the problem. Information in this publication will help identify and manage pest problems. Pest management methods will vary among individuals according to their tolerance of the pest, the damage and a basic philosophy about handling pest problems. It may not be necessary to control pests if numbers are low and damage is not significant. At other times, simply spraying a tree with water, pruning a branch or digging up a weed will reduce or eliminate the problem. Natural predators may also control the pest problem. Backyard Pest Management is designed to help focus on the key areas of pest management. The first section provides basic approaches to pest management and looks at ways to prevent problems and handle them as they arise. The western blue flat conservation program, managed by the Alberta Conservation Association, was established to deliver the monitoring and stewardship activities identified in the Action plan. In 2003, two new landowners joined the program for a total of eight participants. In 2002, a monitoring protocol for the conservation program was initiated. This includes a landowner questionnaire, tracking of on-the-ground management on cooperating ranches, and monitoring the response of western blue flag over time.

This wildlife status report looks at the small-flowered sand verbena, an annual plant of the four o'clock family, so named because the flowers tend to open in the late afternoon. It is found in dry habitats, particularly in loose sands of dune and sandhilll areas. It is widely distributed in the western United States, but in Canada it is found at only eight locations in southeastern Alberta and one nearby Saskatchewan location. The status of the flower in Alberta is May Be At Risk. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

This wildlife status report looks at the western spiderwort, a herbaceous perennial wildflower and the only species of Tradescantia native to Alberta. Widely distributed in the central United States, the western spiderwort is found at only four locations in Canada, one of which is along the old dune fields east of Pakowki Lake in Alberta. It is designated as Threatened in Canada. This report summarizes existing information on western spiderwort in Alberta as a step in assessing its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.

Description

In Canada, all of the known naturally occurring populations of western blue flag occur in the Cardston area of southwestern Alberta, within 10 km of the United States border. Prior to this project, six sites of naturally occurring western blue flag were confirmed in Alberta. As a result of investigations carried out in 2000, it is believed that only four of the six remain. Two new sites were discovered near previously known locations. Inventories conducted at all sites in 2000 revealed a total of 8705 stems. Information is inadequate to determine populations trends at most sites; however, western blue flag appears to be declining at a site in Police Outpost Provincial Park.
