This guide was developed to support schools and daycares when they undertake an assessment of lead and copper in drinking water in their facilities. It provides details on how to conduct an assessment of potential lead and copper, how to interpret the results when lead and copper levels exceed Health Canada's maximum acceptable concentration, and how to access support from Alberta Health Services throughout the assessment process.

The growing challenges of ensuring safe, reliable drinking water in Alberta have increased the need for a more integrated, collaborative approach to minimize water treatment costs, reduce public health risks and protect drinking water sources. In 2018, the Government of Alberta partnered with the Alberta Water Council to form a multi-sector project team to provide guidance for protecting sources of drinking water in Alberta. This guide provides advice on how to protect drinking water sources through source water protection planning.

Funds were provided over the years of 2005 to 2009.
