This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Wabasca Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Wabasca population. The Wabasca Bison Protection Area provides additional protection from all hunting (by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people) to avoid extirpation of this small population of wood bison. This map can be viewed with a standard PDF viewer, but contains additional interactive enhancements that can only be accessed through specific reader apps. A detailed description of the Wabasca Bison Protection Area boundaries can be found within Schedule 11 of the Wildlife Regulation.

This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Northwest Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Hay-Zama and Etthithun Lake populations. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, all hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. This map can be viewed with a standard PDF viewer, but contains additional interactive enhancements that can only be accessed through specific reader apps. Description

This guide serves as a manual with instructions and references for using the ABWRET-A methodoloty to assess the relative value of wetlands in the Boreal and Foothills Natural Regions of Alberta. ABWRET-A is a standardized method for rapidly assessing some of the important natural functions of all types of wetlands present in Alberta. Use of the methodology generates scores for a wetland's functions which then are used, with other inputs, to assign a wetland to a value category in a consistent and transparent manner. The category assignment is to be used to inform planning and regulatory decisions around wetland avoidance, minimization and replacement, and to determine the replacement ratios where that is required.

Description

Wetlands cover approximately 21 per cent of the land area of the province of Alberta and are unique ecosystems that provide several valuable ecological economic functions including water storage and flood attenuation, erosion control, water quality improvement and habitat for various plant and animal species. Many wetlands in Alberta, especially in the southern half of the province, have been negatively impacted by anthropogenic disturbances which in turn affect the wetland health and function. The purpose of this report is to conduct a review of the primary literature on Alberta wetlands and identify potential indicators of health of wetland ecosystems i Alberta, specifically in the Prairie, Aspen Parkland and Boreal Dry Mixedwood regions.

This study focused on the inventory of natural and semi-natural plant communities. Unique or recurring plant communities were identified in the field and inventoried using standard provincial ecological site and vegetation forms. The concepts for potential plant communities were first developed in the field by tabulating the percent ground cover of dominant species within each stratum for each stand sampled. This preliminary grouping of stands with similar characteristics helped to identify potential communities and to direct sampling efforts. A range of site positions and ecological conditions were investigated in search of unique or recurring plant communities. Field data was then analysed using PC-ORD (Version 4.25) to statistically determine grouping of plant communities using Detrended Correspondence Analysis and agglomerative cluster analysis.
