This information sheet explains the requirements for co-ownership of large live animals from an on-farm slaughter operation. A large animal, such as bison, beef or elk is one that weighs more than 227 kg. Ownership of the large live animal is transferred when the on-farm slaughter operation sells the large live animal prior to slaughter.; this must be arranged prior to slaughter as the sale of uninspected meat remains illegal in Alberta.

Presents the results of an aerial survey of wood bison in the Hay-Zama region from February 23-March 1, 2023. Aerial surveys are the primary method used to assess the population size, distribution, population trends and herd composition of ungulates in Alberta. This information supports the effective management and conservation of ungulates, and is used to set hunting licence allocations, identify areas with agricultural depredation problems, and determine priority areas for recovery actions.

This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Wabasca Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Wabasca population. The Wabasca Bison Protection Area provides additional protection from all hunting (by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people) to avoid extirpation of this small population of wood bison. This map can be viewed with a standard PDF viewer, but contains additional interactive enhancements that can only be accessed through specific reader apps. This georeferenced map shows the boundaries of the Northwest Bison Protection Area in northern Alberta. Wood bison located within specified Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) are listed as Threatened under the Wildlife Act and Regulation, including the Hay-Zama and Etthithun Lake populations. In order to support the conservation, management and recovery of disease-free bison in northern Alberta, all hunting of wood bison within Northwest Bison Protection Area is regulated and based on issuance of a bison special licence and allocation processes for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. The designated area is intended to support the efforts of Banff National Park to reintroduce bison by providing a buffer area where bison are protected, should they leave the reintroduction area, and until Parks Canada staff can redirect them back into the park.
