Research has shown that in Alberta, the amount of phosphorus in streams increases with agricultural intensity in watersheds. The goal of the Alberta Phosphorus Watershed Project was to determine if wide-spread adoption of environmental beneficial management practices would improve water quality at the watershed scale, as well as to develop the Alberta Phosphorus Management Tool. This report supplements the previously published 2013–2017 Alberta Phosphorus Watershed Project progress report by summarizing the results and progress of the Alberta Phosphorus Watershed Project from 2018–2020.

Highlights work done by the Alberta Phosphorus Watershed Project between 2013-2017. The purpose of the project was to determine if widespread adoption of agricultural beneficial management practices would improve water quality at the watershed scale, and to develop the Alberta Phosphorus Management Tool as a means to identify highest risks for phosphorous loss. Results are presented in a detailed technical science report and an overview and key findings fact sheet.

Description

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for crop growth. Alberta soils are generally deficient or low in phosphorus for optimum crop production (<60 ppm). Successful crop production requires the addition of phosphorus in the form of fertilizer or manure. However, the loss of phosphorus from the landscape can negatively impact water quality. Phosphorus can move with eroded soil or be dissolved in runoff water and carried to nearby surface water bodies. Too much phosphorus in lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams can speed up aquatic plant and algae growth. This process is called eutrophication, which can lead to oxygen depletion, release of toxins, degraded water quality, fish deaths and odours. When Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) are used in the management of phosphorus, losses are minimized and crops receive maximum benefit.

Numerous beneficial management practices (BMPs) have been developed and promoted to minimize the impacts of agriculture on the environment and increase the sustainability of the agricultural industry. However, the effectiveness of BMPs under Alberta conditions is not well known. This study evaluates the effectiveness of nutrient BMPs on water quality improvement in prime agricultural regions in Alberta, at field and watershed scales, in order to provide viable options for sustainable agriculture and water quality protection.

This resource provides the conclusions and recommendations of the Nutrient Beneficial Management Practices Evaluation Project, a six-year research project (2007-2012) to evaluate nutrient beneficial management practices at field and watershed scales in Alberta. Beneficial management practices are defined as conservation practices, management techniques, or social actions that minimize potential negative effects on the environment while being practical for producers to meet or exceed regulatory requirements and meet production targets.
