Description

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (2014 – 2024) has 122 strategies supporting eight key economic, social and environmental outcomes. As a means of assessing the progress made towards achieving the outcomes, various core and additional indicators are identified and regularly monitored, evaluated and reported on. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation implements and annually reports on agriculture-specific and agriculture-supported strategies. This report compiles implementation status of these strategies up to the end of 2021.

These reports summarize the Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards status for Alberta’s air zones for ambient concentrations of fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulphur dioxide. These reports also summarizes the status of air quality in relation to the Air Quality Management Frameworks currently in place in Alberta: the Lower Athabasca AQMF supporting the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan and the South Saskatchewan AQMF supporting the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan.

Description

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan came into effect in September 2014, and was the second regional plan established under Alberta's Land Use Framework. The progress reports offer information regarding the work accomplished or the barriers encountered in implementing the the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan and highlight the status of all the strategic commitments made in the plan. The reports meet the legislative requirements described in the Alberta Land Stewardship Act and the regulatory requirements embedded in the plan. They also fulfill a public commitment to regularly monitor and answer the question "was progress made toward achieving desired regional objectives expressed within the approved regional plans?"

In this report, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide concentrations measured at continuous air monitoring stations in the Lower Athabasca Region are assessed against the ambient air quality thresholds set by the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan. The report is part of the Government of Alberta's commitments made under the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan to annual and ongoing monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

In this report, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and fine particulate matter concentrations measured at continuous air monitoring stations in the South Saskatchewan Region are assessed against the ambient air quality triggers and limits set by the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan. Management levels are assigned to each monitoring station based on the results of this assessment.
