Description

Fall index netting (FIN) is conducted each year during late summer and fall on selected Alberta lakes to monitor walleye and Northern pike populations. The abundance of adult fish as determined by the netting is used to help determine the risk to the sustainability of the fish population in a lake. This report presents the results of netting conducted in 2021 on Lac La Biche.

This report contains preliminary information and interpretations that might be subject to future revisions. Persons who wish to quote from this report, cite it in a bibliography, or use it in any other form must first obtain permission from Executive Director, LAR Operations Division, or the author. The Lac La Biche Fisheries Restoration Program was initiated in 2005 as a six-part program with management actions targeting commercial and recreational fishery reductions, walleye stocking, double-crested cormorant control, protection of critical fish areas and monitoring. The social objective of the program was to improve fishing opportunities for future generations by resotring the lake to historical conditions. The ecological objectives were to recover the walleye population and improve the overall size structure of the fish community.

The Lac La Biche Fisheries Restoration Program was initiated in 2005 with the objectives of improving fishing opportunities for future generations by restoring the lake to historical conditions, and recovering the walleye population and improving the overall size structure of the fish community. This publication reports on the actions taken by the Program to reach these objectives between 2005 and 2013, and the results and success of these actions.

In summer 2009, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation proposed adding the islands in the east basin of Lac La Biche to Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Feedback was gathered during a 60 day online public comment period that ended August 14, 2009. The province took all comments into consideration before making a decision. The proposal was approved Order-in-Council O.C. 117/2010, April 15, 2010.

This document describes recommended effluent quality objectives for municipal wastewater in the Lakeland/Lac La Biche region. Effluent from the wastewater treatment plant has severely altered Field Lake, Red Deer Brook, and contributed to the deterioration of Lac La Biche. The existing technology-based effluent standards cannot satisfy the requirements to protect the Lac La Biche watershed. Thus, place-based effluent quality objectives were developed with key stakeholders to regulate the municipal effluent discharge to Field Lake and Lac La Biche. Recommended objectives are based on achieving the highest possible effluent quality, given current technology. The primary purpose of these objectives is to protect Field Lake and Lac La Biche.

Presents the results of a study by Alberta Environmental Protection of water quality in Lac La Biche in response to complaints in the spring of 1992 about the taste and odour in the water supply for the Town of Lac La Biche. In particular, lake bottom sediments in the area of the intake and elsewhere were sampled to determine whether excessive organic material in the sediments was contributing to water quality problems in the water supply and whether water quality might be improved by relocating the intake.
