The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, MPB) is native to western Canada. It attacks all pine including lodgepole, limber, whitebark and jack pine. Over the past 40 years the range of mountain pine beetle has expanded, possibly due to changes in the area of climatically suitable habitat. Known Limitations: The areas surveyed each year can be different and therefore year over year comparisons may be difficult. the surveyors do not do ground truthing for all disturbances identified, therefore it is not guaranteed that all of the disturbances are caused by MPB. the surveyors do not necessarily map tree patches less than three red trees and therefore the dataset may not include all MPB killed trees. 'grey' attacked trees are not captured. the surveyors attempt to distinguish between 'new' faders and 'old' faders but the accuracy of this distinction is not guaranteed and therefore the data may reflect several years and several generations of MPB attack. Aerial overview surveys are carried out by observers in fixed-wing aircraft flying at appropriate safe heights above ground level over the forest canopy. Surveys cover extensive areas to detect as many new FHDA-caused disturbances as possible. Surveyors record locations, extent, severity, possible causative agent and host tree species involved in the disturbances. Aerial surveys are cost-effective means of obtaining forest health damaging agent (FHDA) caused disturbance data at the landscape level. These surveys help to manage forests by providing early detection of FHDAs and once detected, by monitoring their trends. The Wetland Inventory Pilot project is part of ongoing efforts to develop innovative wetland mapping methodologies across Alberta, Canada with the objective to refine and establish wetland inventory mapping methodologies using advanced Earth Observation (EO) imagery and machine learning (ML) techniques. Wetland Inventory was developed for four pilot study areas within Alberta for the Boreal 1: South Hay-Zama Lake (7,613 km2), Boreal 2: North Slave Lake (21,215 km2), Grassland located east of Brooks (5,065 km2) and Parkland located east of Red Deer (5,170 km2). These areas were selected to represent the broad diversity of wetlands and land-uses in the province. The Boreal study areas utilized EO sources from Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and high-resolution airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR. The Riparian Areas Assessment of the Swan River Watershed focused on assessing riparian habitat along creek, stream and river shorelines. This dataset was created for the Lesser Slave Water Council as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the riparian habitat management in the Lesser Slave Lake watershed by assessing riparian areas along approximately 582 km of shoreline. The riparian areas that were assessed were located within the Swan River watershed (HUC 8) and included the left and right banks of the Swan, Moosehorn and Inverness Rivers. This study created a recent land cover layer within 50 m of selected shorelines and use this layer to assess the intactness of riparian areas along major waterbodies. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is the responsible authority for the protection, recovery and conservation of all listed aquatic species at risk in Canada. Critical habitat is defined as the habitat that is necessary for the survival or recovery of a listed wildlife species and that is identified as such in the recovery strategy or action plan for the species (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/species-risk-public-registry.html). This dataset provides the point locations of horse bands as they were observed during annual aerial surveys. Equine Management Zones are surveyed using a helicopter and horses observed on the landscape during minimum count surveys are reported. Data is stored in file geodatabase, feature class format with associated attributes, meaning each point has a number of horses observed and age class. This dataset simply reports the horses counted on the landscape at one snapshot in time. This data also depicts the flight track flown during the annual aerial minimum counts. Surveys are flown by helicopter once per year when suitable conditions permit. Areas are typically flown by grid pattern within high density areas and over known horse locations. The Riparian Area Assessment of Red Deer River watershed includes the Buffalo, Kneehills, Little Red Deer and Threehills subwatershed. This project focused on assessing riparian habitat along lake, creek, stream and river shorelines. This dataset was created for the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the intactness of riparian management areas in the Red Deer River watershed. Riparian habitat was assessed along approximately 5,285 km of shoreline within the Buffalo, Kneehills, Little Red Deer, and Threehills subwatersheds. These four subwatersheds cover an area of ~11,754 km2 and are located in central Alberta, roughly between Ponoka and Airdrie.

This dataset was created for the Athabasca Watershed Council as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the intactness of riparian management areas in the Pembina River watersheds, and to further assess pressure on riparian system function by evaluating land use and land cover within local catchments immediately adjacent to the waterbodies included in this study.
