Description

This dataset is a digital representation of the Land Use Zones delineated in 'A Policy for Resource Management of the Eastern Slopes (Revised 1984).” There are 8 land use zones classified in the Eastern Slopes Region, falling under either one of the 3 broad areas of zoning: Protection (Prime Protection and Critical Wildlife), Resource Management (Special Use, General Recreation, Multiple Use and Agriculture) or Development (Industrial and Facility). The digital data was created based on paper maps of various scales and bases, in conjunction with digital files obtained from regional staff that were available. The horizontal positional accuracy of the layer is of +/- 500 metres. No attempt was made to check any zoned areas where discrepancies were not apparent.

The data in this information product illustrates the boundaries of Alberta's 87 Provincial Electoral Divisions. Electoral Boundaries are defined by the Alberta Election Act, Chapter E-1, 2018. Provincial Electoral Divisions (PEDs) are territorial units represented by an elected Member to serve in the Alberta Provincial Legislative Assembly. The Provincial Electoral Divisions used in this information product were enacted in December 2017 and came into effect for the 2019 provincial general election.

National parks, because of their similar intent, are also included. Boundaries have been interpreted from written legal descriptions appended to Orders-in-Council. In case of discrepancy between the GIS data and the written legal description, the written legal description shall take precedence. Please note that this dataset replaces the following datasets: Ecological Reserve, Heritage Rangeland, National Park, Natural Area, Provincial Park, Provincial Recreation Area, Wilderness Area, Wilderness Park, and Wildland Park.

Description

The Riparian Area Assessment of Red Deer River watershed includes the Buffalo, Kneehills, Little Red Deer and Threehills subwatershed. This project focused on assessing riparian habitat along lake, creek, stream and river shorelines. This dataset was created for the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the intactness of riparian management areas in the Red Deer River watershed. Riparian habitat was assessed along approximately 5,285 km of shoreline within the Buffalo, Kneehills, Little Red Deer, and Threehills subwatersheds. These four subwatersheds cover an area of ~11,754 km2 and are located in central Alberta, roughly between Ponoka and Airdrie.

Description

The Provincial Parks Act provides for designation of lands to be managed under the Act that are not established as parks/protected areas. These lands are 'declared' under the Provincial Parks (Section 7 Declaration) Regulation, and are legally described in Schedules to the Regulation. Specific provisions of the Act and regulations may be applied to each land parcel declared under section 7 to provide for management of the lands. Section 7 is used to address interim management of lands that have been acquired for park/protected area purposes but are not yet designated, or where activities not permitted in a park/protected area are being managed until such time as the activity is completed and the lands can be designated as a park/protected area. The applicable Ministerial Order is referenced in the 'NOTES' field.

The Riparian Area Assessment of the Upper, Mid and Lower Pembina River Watersheds project focused on assessing riparian habitat along lake, creek, stream and river shorelines. This dataset was created for the Athabasca Watershed Council as a part of a large scale riparian area assessment in Alberta. The overall goal of this project was to quantify and characterize the intactness of riparian management areas in the Pembina River watersheds, and to further assess pressure on riparian system function by evaluating land use and land cover within local catchments immediately adjacent to the waterbodies included in this study.
