Description

The purpose of the bridge conceptual design phase of a bridge design is to find the most suitable solution for a roadway to cross a stream, road, or other facility. These guidelines cover all aspects of bridge conceptual design, including bridge location, sizing, geometrics, and protection works. This document provides certain criteria that must be met with all feasible options, as well as a description of the process and technical considerations to be employed to arrive at the optimal solution.

Intended as a resource for inspectors, project managers, and contractors. Provides commentary, interpretation and guidance on the provisions contained in the Standard Specifications for Bridge Construction Edition 16 (2017) and the Engineering Consulting Guidelines for Highway, Bridge, and Water Projects, Volume 1 (2011) and Volume 2 (2013). Volume 2 of the manual consists of inspection check sheets developed for each technical section contained within Volume 1. These inspection check sheets are provided as a resource to the bridge construction inspector for conducting regular inspection activities.

The Roadside Design Guide states that the minimum bridge width for new bridge construction is 9.0m. However, the closest configurations of SLC girders to this standard provide either 8.7m or 9.9m clear roadway. Technically, the minimum standard would rule out use of the 8.7m clear roadway configuration. However, due to the potentially significant cost increase, the practice outlined in this resource has been developed to achieve a balance between the principles behind the minimum standard and the available structure options.
